From Research to Effective Practice

The Second World Conference, held in London, September, 2002

After two years of planning and preparation the Conference provided delegates with a very varied range of topics presented by both, internationally recognised experts in the field and hands-on practitioners from clinical, professional, governmental and academic backgrounds.

With registrations received from 30 countries the proceedings attracted perhaps the largest ever group for such a conference in the UK. Judging by the exceptionally positive delegate evaluations the event proved to be a very successful event on the mental health promotion calendar.

There were over 100 papers presented in a series of symposia during the three days of the Conference in addition to the keynote lectures and the plenary sessions covering the major themes, i.e.

  • Analysing the problem in prevention and mental health promotion
  • Influencing effective national policy
  • Developing stakeholder partnerships
  • From research to effective programmes
  • Developing a competent workforce for prevention and promotion in mental health

It would be impossible to thank everyone who helped make the Conference such a success and trust you will excuse any omissions. However special thanks must go to Mrs. Carter who again took such an active role in conference proceedings, Commissioner David Byrne from the European Commission for kindly agreeing to act as Patron, Jacqui Smith, Minister of State for Health England) and Jane Hutt, Minister for Health and Social Services (Wales); both of whom provided support prior to and during the Conference.

Of course the Conference also provided the opportunity for networking and the forming of  new contacts while the elegant reception in the Commonwealth and Foreign Office, hosted by the Jacqui Smith, Minister for Health, offered a very splendid and cordial occasion to relax.
